Home School Teaching Tools

With the proliferation of home school in America, there are numerous sources to ensure that these home school function as well as public or private school. Even some churches that emphasize home schooling have their own curriculum materials to help the home school teacher. For the sake of argument, we will consider the home school teacher as being a stay-at-home mother. Of course fathers do perform this function, but mothers are most often the ones in charge.

Most every town has a school supply store. These stores now provide home school teaching tools for students who learn at home. They have teaching tools for kindergarten to high school. If money is no object, all you have to do is purchase the needed materials each year when you start the home school. Many home schools are year round schools so that the students do not waste the summer forgetting everything they have learned. Of course, family vacations can be scheduled any time with year round school.

There are many online site which offers curriculum materials for the home schooners. Some are religious in nature but others are not. After the decision is made to home school, the parents must decide which way they intend to go. Because so many parents make the home schooling decision for religious reasons, the Bible based curriculum materials are very popular. Many are free of charge and some sites charge a modest fee. Still others are rather expensive. After researching as much as possible, parents must decide what materials to use. It is best if possible to stay with one curriculum set of materials and stay with this throughout the home schooling experience. If the site doesn’t carry students from kindergarten through high school, you may have to make changes for the older grades.

Some times parents who decide to home school their children feel overwhelmed and have problems making decisions. A really good idea is to meet with other home schoolling parents to ask them questions. Many towns have groups of home school teachers who meet together to exchange ideas and to help one another. This working together is a wonderful idea.

Many home schooling teachers feel isolated and lonely with just the children to talk with all day. Meeting with other home schooling parents helps so much with the feelings of inadequacy of worry about failure. Also, when the parents get together the children who are home schooled get to socialize with one another.

Home schooling can work. I am a public school high school teacher. We had a family of five home schooled students come through our high school. Four out of five were gifted. The one who didn’t test out gifted was everyone’s favorite student. All of these students came to high school perfectly ready for high school. They participated in activities such as drama and chorus. Three were valedictorians. Now this is not the norm but it is possible if the home school teacher is dedicated and the children are motivated.
