Home School California

In California home schooling was once the center of radicals or fundamentalists or at least that was the stereotypical picture everyone had. Now as more and more people in California are making the decision to home school their children, this picture has changed forever. Parents are home schooling their children for many reasons with the most important being to give their children the best possible educational experience.
Many people have decided to home school California style because they took the advantage and wisdom of working together to create a haven for excellent home schooling. There are seminars and workshops all over California to help parents in their quest to home school their children. When parents and even educators work together to create curriculum materials, study goals and mission statements, they can help children to learn in the quiet, safe environment of their own homes. Right now there are over 175, 000 home schooled children in California.
As in any state parents are legally required to send their children to school. All states have compulsory education laws. It is very important to check with the laws in your state before creating a home school. If you have a lawyer, consult him about the laws. If not, ask other parents who home school their children what they did to be in compliance with state laws. Another good idea is to check the Internet for information about your state laws. As a last resort, you can visit your local Board of Education and ask what you need to do to make sure that your home school plan is compliant.
In California there are many ways to home school. Being familiar with some of the different methods may help you before you plan your home school. This is a good idea before you take the initiative to make sure you are compliant. If one of the parents has a valid California teaching certificate for the grades you will be teaching or you hire a certified teacher to work as a home tutor, you must have school at least three hours per day for 175 days. Some people may want their children in school more hours than this so that their home school will be more like public or private schools.
Another home school method is to have an Independent Study Program through public or private schools. You and your child will be responsible for meeting with teachers or program directors from time to time. Another and least invasive way to home school is to file a private school affidavit. This method does not require a certified teacher in the home school. If you are unclear on the rules for this method, you should obtain assistance from a home school organization or a lawyer. Compliance with the law is of utmost importance with home schools.
The home private school requires extensive paper work including curriculum and how you will implement the curriculum. If this sounds too difficult or too time-consuming you might want to enlist the help of a certified teacher or curriculum director to help you with your school plan. You also need to keep records to prove that you are actually implementing your school plan and copies of your child’s work to prove the implementation. Most home school parents keep the entire year’s work in file folders or file boxes.
When your child is ready to graduate from home school, he can take one of two tests. He can take the typical GED after his sixteenth birthday or the California High School Proficiency Test. Passing either of these tests is the ebullient of graduation. The GED requires that applicants must be within 60 days of their eighteenth birthday.
If the rules seem daunting, they probably are. If you want to home school your child in California, be sure that you know the law and are in compliance. When in doubt, get help so that you will be sure of compliance.
